چکیده

We compare four different model geometries for particles with small-scale surface roughness. The geometries are based on regular and stochastic surface perturbations, as well as on 2Dand 3D-roughness models. We further compare T-matrix and discrete dipole computations. Particle size parameters of 5 and 50 are considered, as well as refractive indices of 1.6+0.0005i and 3+0.1i. The effect of small-scale surface roughness on the intensity and polarisation of the scattered light strongly depends on the size parameter and refractive index. In general, 2D surface roughness models predict stronger effects than 3D models. Stochastic surface roughness models tend to predict the strongest depolarising effects, while regular surface roughness models can have a stronger effect on the angular distribution of the scattered intensity. Computations with the discrete dipole approximation only cover a limited range of size parameters. T-matrix computations allow us to significantly extend that range, but at the price of restricting the model particles to symmetric surface perturbations with small amplitudes.

Reflection spectra of four porous silicon samples under etching times of 2, 6, 10, and 14 min with current density of 10 mA/cm2 were measured. Reflection spectra behaviors for all samples were the same, but their intensities were different and decreased by increasing the etching time. The similar behavior of reflection spectra could be attributed to the electrolyte solution concentration which ...

Effects of surface roughness on light scattering by small particles

Roughness exists on almost all natural particle surfaces, such as spores, aerosols, cells, etc. In this paper, we study the effects of surface roughness on light scattering for spherical shaped particles. A 3D finitedifference time domain model is used to solve for all the optical properties of the scatterer. We will introduce a roughness parameter and show its effect on the light scattering pr...

The effective equivalence of geometric irregularity and surface roughness in determining particle single-scattering properties.

This study investigates the effects of geometric irregularity and surface roughness on the single-scattering properties of randomly oriented dielectric particles. Starting from a regular crystal with smooth faces, effects of roughening are compared with effects of perturbing the regular configuration of the smooth faces. Using the same slope distribution for small roughness facets and tilted fa...

Effects of surface roughness with two scales on light scattering by hexagonal ice crystals large compared to the wavelength_ DDA results

The effect of ice crystal surface roughness on light scattering by ice crystals which are large compared to the wavelength was studied, in particular changes to the 2D scattering patterns, azimuthally averaged phase functions, degree of linear polarisation patterns and asymmetry parameters for a range of orientations and roughness scales. It was found that roughness has an effect on light scatt...

Exploring the Surface Roughness of Small Ice Crystals by Measuring High Resolution Angular Scattering Patterns

Surface roughness of atmospheric ice particles is an important yet poorly investigated microphysical property in the context of the climate impact of cirrus and mixedphase clouds. Measurements of single particle two-dimensional light scattering patterns have been shown to be a promising method to identify particle roughness in natural clouds. This method was applied in a laboratory study on the...
